National Church Life Survey – a window into parish life

Every five years we get an opportunity to open a window into parish life. Through this window a camera is pointed, capturing the views and practices of parishioners in a moment of time.

Parishes are increasingly diverse. More people with different backgrounds, different beliefs, different values. A question constantly facing parish leadership is – how can we all become more Christ-like, more faithful disciples of Christ? Can we help grow such a diverse group?

This is where the NCLS comes in. The survey may take only 20 minutes to fill in, but the information that comes out is like gold. Every year the NCLS team has improved the analysis of the data so that now parishes are equipped with even better tools than ever before to help in the mission of the church.

The survey helps parishes know where their strengths lay, and where they can best focus energy and resources to be more effective in discipling and mission.

In the 2011 version of ths survey, there were three key additions to the standard survey – an online youth survey, a survey for community members marginally associated with the parish, and a leaders survey that identifies leadership gifts.

The survey not only benefits parishes but the Diocese as a whole. The results can be used as one of the measures of the progress of the Mission Plan - Daring to live God’s promises.
