Cathedral Lecture - Justice and Faith

This is the second lecture in the 2007 Cathedral Lecture Series on Justice and Faith.  The first was held in February with guest speaker, His Excellency, the Honourable Justice Kevin Parker AO RFD, Vice President, International Court of Justices, The Hague.

On 2nd August 2007, The Most Reverend and Right Honourable Dr John Sentamu spoke on 'Justice Under Tyranny'.  In this lecture, Dr Sentamu reflected on his experience of the exercise of justice and faith under a tyrannical regime.  He also related these issues to his more recent experience of the problems of racism and prejudice within the justice system of the United Kingdom.

Dr Sentamu was born in Uganda in 1949 and read law at Makerere University in Kampala.  In 1973 at the age of 24 he was appointed a High Court Judge by the recently appointed President Idi Amin.  His judicial independence and criticism of the regime, especially for its human rights violations, resulted in him fleeing to the United Kingdom after attacks on him.

He read Theology at Cambridge University where he gained a Masters’ degree and a Doctorate.  He was ordained in 1979 and consecrated in 1996 as Bishop of Stepney.  In 2002 he was appointed Bishop of Birmingham and in June 2005 Archbishop of York.
