World News
Thursday, 24 April
Greg Thompson, CEO of Anglicord, has sent in the following request:
As the people of Zimbabwe wait for an end to the impasse over the future of their nation, I urge you to invite the clergy and people of your Dioceses to join the world wide Anglican community, and the wider ecumenical family, in a day of prayer for Zimbabwe this coming Sunday 27th April.
A desperate cry from the hearts of Zimbabwe screams across the world, calling upon the clergy and people of every denomination in every nation to focus their prayers, in churches, halls, homes or elsewhere, on Sunday 27th April, 2008 on the critical situation in Zimbabwe, a nation in dire distress and teetering on the brink of human disaster.
This morning we woke to the news of a plea from the Heads of Churches in Zimbabwe to the international community to intervene, raising concern about their fear of genocide if the current reprisals are not prevented.
Day of Prayer for Zimbabwe: Sunday 27th April.
The Chancellor of the Anglican Diocese of Harare is urging all across the Anglican Communion to join a global day of prayer:
“We call upon all Christians of every denomination in every nation to focus their prayers, in churches, homes or elsewhere, on the critical situation in Zimbabwe - a nation in dire distress and teetering on the brink of human disaster.
“Let the cry for help touch your heart and mind. Let it move you to do what you can immediately to ensure this day of Prayer takes place in your country and neighbourhood.
"It is by making the truth publicly known that we recommend ourselves to the honest judgment of humankind in the sight of God." (2 Corinthians 4:2)”
We are being urged to pray that God will
· rescue Zimbabwe from violence, deceit, oppression, and corruption, including manipulation of the election results
· bring about righteousness, joy, peace, compassion, honesty, justice, democracy and freedom from fear and want.
Anglican Church of Zimbabwe
Political manipulation and internal divisions have wreaked havoc on churches, not least in the Anglican Church, over the past decade.
There are new signs of hope for the Anglican Church, with significant leadership change in Harare. Last year the Bishop of Harare, Nolbert Kunonga, who has a long political association with ZANU-PF, was dismissed. The highly regarded retired Bishop Sebastian Bakare was appointed to the role.
Partnerships & advocacy for change
We can encourage the Australian Government to support the people of Zimbabwe as they seek peaceful, democratic change and to rebuild their devastated nation.
This week the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Stephen Smith, described the election recount as a “blatant attempt by Mr Mugabe to ..pervert the will of the Zimbabwe people”.
Australians can also financially support programs that improve the daily lives of people in Zimbabwe. AngliCORD is now developing a partnership with the Anglican Church of Zimbabwe, in collaboration with other Anglican aid agencies including Lambeth Palace (Anglicans in Development), USPG, and Christian Aid.
The focus will be on supporting efforts by the Mother’s Union to care for orphans and provide home-based care for people living with HIV and AIDS, and re-launching kitchen gardens on church land to provide food for the most vulnerable.
I have written to the Primate and the Hon. Stephen Smith re our concern for the situation in Zimbabwe.

British sugar refiner Tate and Lyle to switch to Fairtrade
LONDON (AFP) - Tate and Lyle, the biggest sugar cane refiner in Europe, announced Saturday that it would switch to Fair Trade sugar supplies in Britain to guarantee producers in poor countries a fair price.
Sugar giant's switch is a Fairtrade Fortnight landmark
Manufacturing giant Tate and Lyle's decision to switch its retail cane sugars range to Fair Trade has been welcomed by development campaigners and church aid agencies - but the need to move the social justice agenda in economics reamins, they say.
