“O Lord, you have searched me out and known me” Ps 139:1
God calls all Christians to live out our faith in the world. Each of us is asked to find our vocation in life: the way God wants us to contribute to building up the body of Christ, the Church.
The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ (Ephesians 4:11-13 NRSV).
At our baptism, we are called to ministry:
This often unrecognised and informal ministry is the most important from of mission: sending out the Good News into the world.
“You discern my path …. You are acquainted with all my ways” Ps 139:2
There are four questions to ask yourself, and talk over with people who know you well:
If you can answer a confident “yes” to most of these questions, talk to the Chaplain or Parish Priest for your worshipping community, who knows you well and can give helpful advice about ministries within the Church. If not, don’t be discouraged; keep praying and searching for God’s call, which may be quite a surprise!
If your Chaplain or Parish Priest thinks you should explore vocation to ordained ministry, s/he will recommend you to the Chair of the Archbishop’s Examining Chaplains. The Archbishop’s Examining Chaplains are appointed by the Archbishop to assist him in the process. They will work with you to discern where God is calling you.
Through the process, the emphasis is finding God’s call to you at this time in your life. Pray for God’s guidance, that you may know God’s will and follow it with all your heart.
Almighty God, By whose Spirit the whole body of your Church is called into a royal priesthood, Hear our prayer for all members of your Church That in their vocation and ministry They may truly serve you, Devoutly love you And faithfully follow in the way of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
