Letters to the gathering of young people in Valencia, Spain

May the forthcoming European meeting of young Christians on the theme of Mercy be a signal event to set a mark of hope against a mood of despair over so much conflict and injustice which humans inflict upon each other in our world. May those gathering in Valencia, Spain, for the 38th European meeting of Taizé from around Europe find great blessing in this opportunity to reflect together more deeply as Christians on the need to entrust ourselves to our merciful God, on learning to forgive over and over again, and on expanding mercy beyond the personal to its social and environmental dimensions. His Holiness Pope Francis has called for the coming year to be a Year of Mercy. It is, therefore, significant that the call is taken up ecumenically by young people.
