Archbishop's Academic Requirements for Ordination Candidates

Preliminary

Students who do not hold a University degree already will be asked to undertake the Bachelor of Theology degree while University graduates will be asked to undertake the Master of Divinity degree – both degrees of the University of Divinity.

Please refer also to the Appendix 1 to this document, “Archbishop's Academic Requirements For Ordination Candidates Who are Not University Graduates” (B.Theol of the University of Divinity) and Appendix 2, “Archbishop's Academic Requirements For Ordination Candidates Who are University Graduates (M.Div of the University of Divinity).

All students undertaking Tertiary Study for the first time are required to undertake an Introductory Course on Reading, Writing, Research for Academic Purposes [e.g. University of Divinity's Study Skills for Theology (AR1009T)] as an elective Unit.

Essential Units

Humanties (Field A) [2 Units]
2 Units of either Biblical Hebrew or Biblical Greek (Level 1 and Level 2)

(The Warden of Wollaston Theological College may, in special circumstances, permit a student to do a one Unit of Biblical Hebrew and one Unit of Biblical Greek).

Biblical Studies (Field B) [6 Units]

Introduction to the OT (Level 1)

Introduction to the NT (Level 1)
2 other Units of OT (Level 2/3)1 Unit on the Gospels (Level 2/3)
1 Unit of Pauline Letters (Level 2/3)
Christian Thought and History (Field C) [8 Units]
Church HistorySystematic Theology
(1 Unit at Level 1 and the other 3 Units at Level 2/3)
Introduction to Church History (Level 1)1 Unit of Introduction to Theology (Level 1)
Early Church History (Level 2/3)1 Unit of Christology (Level 2/3)
The Reformations (Level 2/3)1 Unit on Triune God (Level 2/3)
1 Unit on the area of Ministry and Sacraments (Level 2/3)

Theology: Mission and Ministry Practical Theology (Field D) [2 Units]
1 Unit on Mission & Ministry (OR Missiology) (Level 1 or 2)
1 Unit on Ethics or Moral Theology (Level 1 or 2)

Students will also need to complete the following and which may or may not accredited as part of their degree:

1 Unit of CPE
1 Unit on Faith/Religion in Australian Society (can be currently undertaken in the Wollaston Certificate and it is hoped it will become a Unit offered through UD from 2022)
Homiletics (taught within the Formation programme but may be supplemented in academic study)
