St Mary the Virgin, South Perth
Parish of South Perth
St Mary’s is a progressive Anglican parish located close to the city in South Perth.
We are a church that welcomes all people, and our parish community includes people of all ages, and from a wide variety of backgrounds.
We believe that our faith calls us to ask questions, engaging with the mystery of God. We believe that God’s love is for all people, and that we are called to respond to that love by loving each other, without limit.
As a parish, we try to be supportive of each other in this journey of discipleship. Sometimes we succeed, and sometimes we fall short, but as a community, we want to keep trying.
We believe that good music has the power to draw us into the presence of God in a unique way. Consequently, music holds an important place in our life at St Mary’s. Our worship on Sundays features professional musicians, producing high quality music that enhances our worship and enables a closer engagement with the divine.
Our doors are open to everyone of any faith or none.
The church of St Mary the Virgin is a heritage building and one of Perth's finest examples of architecture in the art deco idiom. The 1930s Gothic Moderne style in which the church is built is relatively uncommon in Australia.
The church is built almost entirely of reinforced concrete and is listed on the Western Australian Register of Heritage Places and on the South Perth (Central) Municipal Heritage Inventory.
The church site is near the crest of the ridge of high land in South Perth and has a panoramic outlook to the west over the Swan River estuary.
The monument on the church grounds was built in 1970, also of reinforced concrete, comprising a segmented tripod structure supporting a statue representing Christ.
