Addressing Disparity
The Diocese of Perth has been at the forefront of women’s ordained ministry for over thirty years and remains committed to women’s leadership at all levels of the Anglican Church. However, women’s ordination and leadership have not gone uncontested in this and other dioceses in Australia.
The 2024 report Addressing Disparity: listening to the leadership experience of ordained women in Canberra and Goulburn Diocese found that levels of leadership amongst women in parish ministry have gone backwards in recent years. Despite its long-term commitment to women’s ministry as deacons, priests and bishops, the Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn found it had lost women from leadership because of cultural, theological and organisational barriers. The Addressing Disparity report makes several timely recommendations relevant to every diocese seeking to develop an organisational culture that values the full and equal participation of women in leadership.
