Gathering for a Common Purpose

Synod brings people together from across the Diocese with diverse experiences, perspectives, and ministries, united by a shared commitment to serving others and strengthening our communities.

Each year, Synod provides an opportunity for Anglicans across Western Australia to gather, reflect, listen, and discern together. Clergy and lay representatives come from parishes, schools, agencies, and ministries, bringing different experiences and viewpoints, yet sharing a common purpose: to serve God and support the wellbeing of the communities entrusted to our care.

In many ways, this spirit of gathering and collaboration reflects the very heart of community, and while each of us brings unique gifts, perspectives, and responsibilities, we are often strongest when we come together in service of something greater than ourselves.

At Amana Living, this shared sense of purpose is evident every day, as caring for older people is not the work of one individual or profession alone. It is made possible through the combined efforts of care workers, nurses, hospitality teams, chaplains, volunteers, families, and many others who contribute to the wellbeing of our residents and clients.

The Anglican tradition reminds us that community is not simply about being together, but about recognising our responsibility to one another. Throughout the Gospels, we see examples of people gathering to listen, support, and care for those around them, and those same values continue to guide the work of Anglican organisations today.

One of the privileges of working in aged care is witnessing the many ways older people themselves contribute to community. Our residents and clients bring a lifetime of wisdom, experience, faith, and service, and their stories enrich those around them and remind us that every stage of life offers opportunities to learn from one another.

This year, Amana Living has seen many examples of connection across communities, with residents, clients, staff, volunteers, families, and parish members coming together through worship services, community events, volunteer programs, and shared celebrations. These moments may seem simple, but they help foster belonging, strengthen relationships, and remind us that nobody should feel alone.

Amana Living’s chaplaincy teams see this every day through their pastoral care, worship, prayer, and conversation, they help residents and clients maintain meaningful connections with their faith and with one another. Their work reflects the important role that spiritual wellbeing plays in supporting a person’s overall sense of purpose, dignity, and belonging.

In aged care, we are regularly reminded that relationships matter. A conversation, a shared meal, a prayer, or a simple act of kindness can make a profound difference in someone’s day. Perhaps that is one of the enduring strengths of the Anglican community: bringing people together, nurturing belonging, and creating opportunities for people of all ages to contribute, connect, and thrive.

As Synod gathers this year, it is an opportunity to pause and appreciate the many people who contribute to the life of our Diocese in ways both large and small. Across parishes, agencies, schools, and ministries, countless individuals give their time, talents, and care in service of others.
