Empowering Homeless
Youth in Western Australia
Anita Marchesani
As we step into the heart of winter, the chill in the air reminds us of the stark realities faced by thousands of young people across Western Australia. In the midst of bustling cities, suburban comfort and regional towns, the risk of homelessness casts a long shadow over the lives of many individuals and families.
There are at least 9,700 Western Australians who are currently experiencing homelessness, 3,500 of those are under the age of 25.
If you grew up in a loving, stable environment it can be hard to imagine how a young person could possibly find themselves with nowhere to sleep tonight.
Unfortunately, that is the reality for many in our community right now.
The reasons behind someone finding themselves at risk of homelessness are varied and diverse, ranging from family conflict and domestic violence to financial hardship and mental health challenges. The crisis is not only people sleeping rough on the streets, it is also people sleeping in their cars, couch surfing with friends, or in other unstable or unsafe living arrangements.
We recently met Sam*, a resilient eighteen-year-old embarking on her journey through university with dreams of a brighter future. She was forced to flee her family home due to abuse and financial control and found herself sleeping at night in the quiet corners of the university library. It was warm, dry and safer for her than other alternatives.
When university staff discovered her, they compassionately sought the help of Anglicare WA’s Street Connect Youth Workers. Sam was provided food vouchers and the youth workers advocated for her with her teachers to ensure she didn’t lose her place in university.
The Street Connect workers were able to help her secure emergency accommodation and then supported her move into transitional housing, helping her become more secure financially. With their assistance and the lifeline, they provided, Sam found a safe haven but, also regained control over her own destiny. She was able to continue her studies in law, and as the weight of homelessness lifted, she found stability, safety and empowerment.
Sam’s story is but one of many from the thousands of young people facing homelessness tonight. From braving cold nights sleeping in their cars, to asking to seek refuge on a friend’s couch, the struggle for many is real and creates an unending feeling of insecurity and stress.
Imagine for a moment how difficult it would be to prepare for a job interview when you are sleeping in your car and can’t iron your clothes. Or how challenging it would be to study for an exam when you are moving from place to place every night trying to find somewhere safe to sleep.
Amidst the darkness, there is a beacon of hope, a testament to the power of faith and community in transforming lives.
