Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School (BCGS) is a global member of the Round Square organisation, which is founded on six pillars: Internationalism, Democracy, Environment, Adventure, Leadership and Service. These pillars guide many of the activities and initiatives that our students engage in.

Since 2021, one of the significant service projects our students have participated in, is volunteering for the Eat Up program. Eat Up is a national organisation dedicated to providing meals for hungry children in schools, ensuring they have the nourishment they need to learn and grow. It is an alarming statistic that one in eight children in Australia faces hunger at school each day. Our School is currently the only School in the South West region supporting this program.

Through this initiative, students volunteer after school to make over 400 sandwiches per session, which are then delivered to eight local schools around Bunbury.

Recently, Mr Lyndon Galea, the founder of Eat Up, visited our school to express his gratitude. He said, ‘It was enormously special to visit and thank the inspiring students and teaching staff at BCGS who give their time to make and deliver free lunches to local school children who would otherwise go without. Together they make and deliver 425 sandwiches every three weeks to eight schools in Bunbury,’ said Mr Galea.

Hannah Peterson, the Round Square captain, has been an active volunteer with the program for the past two years. She shared, ‘[Volunteering for Eat Up] is a great way of getting to know people you would not usually talk to, and it is always fun working together while also providing for the community.’

‘It has also been amazing to see the increase in the number of students who come along to our Eat Up sessions, which has allowed us to produce more sandwiches for local schools that need them the most,’ she added.

Hannah concluded, ‘I am proud that BCGS is a part of an amazing initiative that has such a great impact on our local community.’

BCGS encourages students to actively participate in service projects that benefit the community. The Eat Up program offers a wonderful opportunity for students to make a tangible difference, and they value the chance to give back and positively impact their community.

Mr Galea also highlighted the importance of the program, stating, ‘It's a special way for young people to get hands-on, working alongside their friends in volunteer events that are both fun and fulfilling! Eat Up has grown to reach and feed more kids by collaborating with locals who are passionate about their hometowns. We are incredibly grateful to BCGS for helping feed hungry kids in Bunbury.’

This initiative exemplifies the school's commitment to service and community engagement, providing meaningful opportunities for students to make a difference.
