The GMAS Buddy Bench:
Fostering Friendship and Connection
At Georgiana Molloy Anglican School (GMAS), fostering a sense of community and connection among students is a top priority. One heartwarming initiative that embodies this mission is the GMAS Buddy Bench, a simple yet powerful tool designed to help students who may feel lonely, sad, or in need of a friend.
The concept of the Buddy Bench is beautifully straightforward. If a student feels the need for companionship, they can sit on the bench, signalling to their peers that they are seeking a friend. The rules are equally simple and encourage inclusivity and kindness: If you choose to sit on the bench, you must say yes to the first friend who invites you to play or walk and talk. Additionally, if a student sees a friend on the bench, they are encouraged to invite them to play or engage in conversation. Two friends sitting on the bench can also turn to each other, initiating a connection that can turn into a lasting friendship.
This initiative not only encourages students to reach out and connect with each other but also fosters an environment of empathy and support. It’s a gentle reminder that even small acts of kindness can make a significant impact on someone’s day.
The creation of the Buddy Bench was a community effort that brought joy and excitement to students of all year levels.
Debbie West from Bunnings (who is also a valued GMAS parent) joined the students in creating and painting the colourful bench with paint generously donated from Bunnings. The project was met with enthusiasm, as students eagerly participated in painting and personalising the bench, making it a vibrant and inviting spot in the schoolyard. This collaborative effort not only made the bench a beautiful addition to the school but also reinforced the message of teamwork and community spirit.
Since its introduction, the Buddy Bench has seen heartwarming success stories of students connecting with each other. It has become a symbol of friendship and support, where students feel safe and encouraged to reach out and make new friends. Teachers have also observed the positive impact, noting how the bench has helped create a more inclusive and caring school environment.
At GMAS, the Buddy Bench is more than just a piece of furniture; it’s a beacon of hope and connection. It’s a place where students learn the importance of empathy, kindness, and the value of extending a hand to someone in need. As students continue to use the Buddy Bench, the spirit of friendship and community at GMAS grows stronger, ensuring that no student ever feels alone.
