Perth Mothers’ Union Up To

What a Celebration! Mothers’ Union turned 150 years old and Members gave thanks for the Vision of Mary Sumner
Perth Diocese Mothers’ Union celebrated 150 years with prayer and thanksgiving on the 20th June with over 130 members, and guests attending.
A Eucharist was led by Bishop Kate Wilmot assisted by Mothers’ Union Chaplain Father Des Smit and The Revd Frida Lemi. The singing by the Sudanese members echoed around St David’s Church, Applecross in praise of the day.
A luncheon was served and a decorated cake cut, by a long time member Merle Andrews from Bassendean. This preceded a variety of speakers. Members were reminded of how this great organisation began in 1876 with Mary Sumner, the wife of a vicar who saw a need to help families. Mary believed that women could support each other and strengthen families and communities.
Our Perth Diocese Mothers’ Union began in 1898 and there were many memories as members heard about the conferences that had been held, the hosting of overseas visitors and the many faithful women, who have given service throughout their life time to Mothers’ Union and their communities. Friendships have been forged through Mothers’ Union many overseas projects. There have been international programs of literacy, women’s empowerment to work and the prevention of gender based violence in countries including the Solomon Islands, Myanmar and South Sudan. These projects have helped greatly in making a better life for women.
Our guest speaker, Kim Brooklyn from Parkerville showed that many families still require help. Mothers’ Union in Christian faith moves forward in hope to give love, prayer and support to the disadvantage and hardship we see in our communities today.
