Proverbs 16:9 – ‘The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.’

The pandemic years were a challenging period for schools worldwide, disrupting traditional learning environments and extracurricular activities. At Peter Moyes Anglican Community School, we are excited that this period of isolation and virtual learning is behind us and has been followed by a resurgence of travel opportunities, providing students with enriching, hands-on experiences that extend far beyond the classroom.

Over the past year, the School has reintroduced international and domestic travel, including a ski trip to Japan, a cultural and language immersion in Jakarta and Bali, a Drama tour to Sydney, and a Service Learning visit to Yipirinya School in Alice Springs.

Japan: A Winter Wonderland of Learning

In early 2024, 52 Peter Moyes students and seven staff embarked on a trip to Japan to explore the snowy landscape of Hakuba and the bustling city of Tokyo.

The ski slopes of one of Japan’s most famous mountains, Goryu, provided a perfect backdrop for students to build resilience, teamwork, and confidence as they learned skiing and snowboarding skills.

After five days on the mountain, the group headed to Tokyo to take in Disneyland, Meiji Shrine, Harajuku, Imperial Palace and Asakusa Sensoji temple.

This trip was more than just a physical challenge; it was a cultural experience which not only allowed students to hone their skiing skills but also to broaden their global perspectives and appreciation for diverse cultures.

Indonesia: Bridging Cultures Through Language and Experience

In late Term 1, 27 students embarked on an Indonesian Cultural Immersion tour. Their itinerary included Jakarta, Indonesia's bustling capital, and Bali. Led by a dedicated team of four staff, students explored a diverse range of experiences.

In Jakarta, students immersed themselves in activities at Global Prestasi School, gaining insights into Indonesian education first-hand. Evenings in Jakarta were spent exploring mega malls, an array of different cuisines, and karaoke sessions. The group then travelled to Bali, where cultural immersion awaited. From mastering the art of Indonesian cooking to learning the intricate techniques of Batik wax printing, every moment was a lesson in culture and tradition.

Students returned home carrying lifelong memories of their adventures and a newfound respect for Indonesia's vibrant culture.

Sydney: The Stage of Learning

The recent Drama tour to Sydney offered 12 of our Year 10 – 12 students an opportunity to explore the world of performing arts in one of Australia's most renowned cultural hubs.

The students were immersed in Sydney's theatre scene, exploring iconic venues during backstage tours of the State Theatre, Sydney Theatre Company, and the Sydney Opera House.

They attended spectacular productions of & Juliet and Chicago, enjoyed the stunning views from the Manly Ferry and explored the lively atmosphere of Darling Harbour.

This tour was an invaluable experience for students, providing them with practical skills, inspiration, and a deeper appreciation for the arts. It also highlighted the importance of creativity and expression in education, encouraging students to explore their passions and talents.

Alice Springs: A Journey of Cultural Understanding

Our Service Learning visit to Yipirinya School in Alice Springs in 2023 was a particularly poignant and meaningful experience for a group of Year 10 and 11 Peter Moyes students.

Yipirinya School was founded by Aboriginal Elders with the aim to provide an education that incorporated both Aboriginal and Western teachings, fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment for all Aboriginal children.

Activities included hiking around Uluru at sunrise, visiting gorges and sacred sites and learning about Indigenous culture. Students spent time in the classroom at Yipirinya and assisted the Year 1 and Year 2 students with their literacy and numeracy, building strong connections with many students.

This experience was an eye-opening one for our students, fostering a deeper respect and understanding of Australia's rich Indigenous heritage, and we are very much looking forward to our return visit in the coming weeks.
