St George’s Anglican Grammar School
Colourful Concepts
for Charity
Charity is an important part of school life at St George’s Anglican Grammar School.
While our teaching and learning programs regularly extend from the classroom to City of Perth libraries, galleries, museums, gardens, parks and a range of cultural venues within the heart of the CBD, so too does the school’s unique approach to supporting worthy causes.
The last day of each term is celebrated with a dedicated House Charity Day. These are run by the Year 12 House Captains, supported by the Heads of House, and provide for a joyful experience for the whole school to be involved in coupled with a healthy dose of interhouse rivalry as each House seeks to raise the most funds for their specific charity.
The school’s three Houses – Gandhi, Lincoln and Mandela – host a colour run, a carnivale extravaganza and a talent show respectively, all in the name of their charity of choice.
This year, Gandhi House raised money for UNICEF and Lincoln House focused their fundraising initiative to levy support for ‘Headspace’, a national youth mental health foundation providing early intervention services to 12–25-year-olds.
Up next is Mandela House’s talent show (when the curtain falls on Term 3) which will see a wide range of staff and student acts performed to a packed auditorium at the Perth Town Hall with the sole aim of raising funds for Anglicare WA and its efforts in tackling homelessness.
St George’s Principal, Mrs Tina Campbell, said the charity days were an important part of the school culture and built a wonderful sense of school spirit and camaraderie prior to our students - who come to us from so many different Perth suburbs - heading their separate ways for school holidays.
‘Through the focus of our termly charity days at St George’s, students quickly develop a keen sense of citizenship, engagement and a collective responsibility which we hope teaches them to actively give back to society at large,’ Mrs Campbell said.
The awareness and importance of giving both donations, time and thinking to charitable causes is also promoted through a variety of year group discussions and assemblies led by Year 12 student leaders throughout the year.
‘Focusing on supporting the needs of others plays a crucial role in shaping our students to become sensitive, caring, compassionate and empathetic to the needs of the people and world around them,’ Mrs Campbell said.
‘Each charity day opens the hearts and minds of our student body to the importance of looking beyond their own wants and needs by nurturing a generosity of spirit where we hope to grow in every student the desire to become active contributors to society and demonstrate that they care deeply about a cause.’
Head of Lincoln House, Mr Vincent Lim, said his students felt that it was not only important to raise awareness for mental health, but to also support the services that provide support. St George’s is currently at the top of the school leaderboard for fundraising for Headspace.
Head of Mandela House, Mr Thomas Dempers, said the upcoming talent show would consist of magic acts, lip sync challenges, dance routines and an array of musical performances to benefit Anglicare WA. ‘The best part about the day is that each and every student is able to participate, whether it’s by performing on stage or cheering on their friends from the sidelines or raising funds for the Mandela charity – every little contribution matters,’ Mr Dempers said.
‘Our showcase performers practice for weeks to perfect their routines. It’s definitely a show with a difference and St George’s has talent in abundance!’
