Volunteering at St Bart’s:
A Community of Compassion and Connection
Lena Hopkinson, Chief Operating Officer
As we celebrate International Volunteers Day on 5 December this year, St Bart’s homeless accommodation, aged care and mental health services stand as a beacon of hope for individuals and families facing hardship. Whilst staff provide essential support, it is the volunteers - our everyday heroes who bring warmth, companionship, and practical help that transform lives at St Bart’s.
St Bart’s residents often feel isolated and alone, having little contact with friends or relatives, or dealing with health and mobility issues that prevent them taking part in social activities. Regular visits from volunteers helps them to reconnect and greatly improves their quality of life and hope for the future.
St Bart’s CEO, Samantha Drury described volunteers as ‘the heart of our mission,’ noting that their contributions extend beyond tasks. ‘Volunteers bring humanity and hope to those who need it most’ she said.
Volunteers often speak of the personal rewards they gain such as new friendships, a deeper understanding of social issues, and the satisfaction of making a tangible difference. Community volunteers and groups also find meaningful engagement through tailored volunteering programs, strengthening community ties and fostering empathy among participants.
St Bart’s offers a wide range of volunteering opportunities, from cooking meals and gardening to providing emotional support and engaging in lifestyle activities. Volunteers assist with tasks such as transporting residents to appointments, hosting social outings, joining our aged-care residents for a game of bingo or simply just having a chat. These acts of kindness not only meet immediate needs but also foster dignity and connection among residents.
For those considering volunteering, St Bart’s welcomes individuals and groups to join. As one volunteer put it, ‘You don’t need special skills—just a willingness to listen, help, and be present.’
