Diocesan Archives

The Diocesan Archives was formalised in 1996 with the Records and Archives Statute 1996 and serves the Anglican community by ‘keeping historic memory alive, accessible and accurate’ (adapted from Summons to Synod 2005, p74).

Diocesan Archives is tasked with acquiring records created by or connected to:

  • Archbishops, Bishops and Assistant Bishops of the Diocese,
  • Diocesan Office,
  • The Province of Western Australia where these documents are held at the offices of the Diocese,
  • Church entities such as parishes and agencies connected to the Diocese, and
  • Church organisations that do not have their own archives.

We all have a responsibility to ensure that records of the Church are retained and kept, to accurately reflect the life of the Church. This includes minutes of parish councils, registers, correspondence, reports and can include pew sheets. Pew sheets are very interesting and useful documents, they often give a wonderful point in time reference for parish life and those who were involved in the parish at the time.

Parishes are encouraged to transfer their archival items, once no longer actively in use. There is however no obligation for parishes to transfer their archival items if they are being properly cared for in the parish. Archives are available to provide advice if you would like to retain your records within the parish. Parishes should consider transferring material when:

  • records are over 25 years’ old,
  • records are too bulky to store at your parish,
  • records are in danger from how they are stored, or
  • the parish is to be merged or closed.

Any records stored in the Archives can be viewed by the Parish on appointment. The Archivist can advise if they currently hold any of your parish records and is also available to discuss your parish archives and records collection and whether you might like to consider transferring relevant material for cataloguing and storing in the Diocesan Archives. A benefit to storing records at the Archives is that they are professionally catalogued which makes searching and retrieval far easier when searching for specific information.

The Archives can be accessed by appointment with the Acting Diocesan Archivist, Mrs Anne Wilson tssf.
