Philosophy of Supervision
Those who serve in pastoral and ministry settings, and those who work in helping professions, are afforded an extraordinary privilege. We are invited to step into peoples’ lives and to share their story as we journey alongside them through the vast landscape of human experience – their joys and sorrows, beginnings and endings, challenges and triumphs.
This vocation demands much from us. We are expected to be available, dependable, and adaptive, and are called to be reflective, intentional, wise, generous, and curious. We are sometimes asked to step into unfamiliar spaces, and to walk alongside those with whom we would ordinarily not have anything in common.
Alongside this, is all that we bring to this work ourselves – our own needs and difficulties, our own prejudices and biases, our own values, and ethics.
Professional supervision affords us the opportunity to put a mirror up to our work so that we might thoughtfully reflect and consider our intentions, motivations, choices, and practices; to learn and grow from them so that we may better serve those in our care.
In offering supervision, I will intentionally create a space for you and for your work that is safe, boundaried and respectful. I will seek to listen deeply and invite you to stay open and curious about who you are, who you serve, and the encounters that connect you. We may explore the systems that contribute to these encounters and flesh out both the good news stories and learning edges that emerge from the outworking of your vocation and ministry.
The time we spend together will be marked by compassion, curiosity, and courage. I will offer you my trust, openness, and confidentiality with the hope that this will give you the freedom and safety to explore the various aspects of your work – and yourself - with an open mind and an open heart. I will also encourage you to be mindful of your own needs as you seek to a live a life of service and love to others. Attending to good selfcare practices is vital for the longevity of our work.
The adage stands true – one cannot pour from an empty cup.
In all things, I will seek to serve you and – by extension – those whom you serve, with grace and kindness.
“Together, we will seek clarity where things are unclear, recover vision where it is enveloped in mist, and bring unseen practice into the light, conscious that our work encompasses not just the individual moments in time, but also the broader context of who we are called to be – as individuals, as communities and as the Kingdom of God.” (Paterson, M)
